Hellooo eliebanksters…I hope you’re having an excellent week and as the weekend is now here I have for you a great book recommendation, a total must-read for entrepreneur either their into fashion or any other industry, and it’s nothing else but Sophia Amorouso’s book #GirlBoss.
For those who are not aware of who she is (and in fact I just came across her a couple of months ago…LOL) Sophia is the founder of the vintage shop “Nasty Gal”. Believe me, as much as I want to spill some spoiler alert on the book, which is super funny because it tells the real story of the crazy life of a bizarre girl and how she ended up founding a company valued at $100 million dollars in 2014 from a desk computer in the lobby of the Art Institute.
I know that maybe you’re not the reading type but I caught you here, right? So I will assure you it’s a light reading book (I just read in like 3 days) So… turning back to the spoiler alert I just want to meditate about the central theme of #GirlBoss which Sophia describes so widely.
A #girlboss is and I quote: “A #GirlBoss is someone who’s in charge of her own life. She gets what she wants because she works for it. As the #GirlBoss, you take control and except responsibility. You’re a fighter-you know when to throw punches and went to roll with them. Sometimes you break the rules, sometimes you follow them, but always on your terms. You know where you’re going, but can’t do it without having some fun along the way. You value honesty over perfection. You ask questions. You take your life seriously, but you don’t take yourself too seriously. You’re going to take over the world, and change it in the process. You’re a badass.”
I believe Sophia is setting the ideal of the power woman of the XXI Century, a woman who knows what she wants and who is willing to work to accomplish what she advances inspite of what the world may think. She values her personality and has a very clear idea of what she deserves. She has taken control of her life and above all she is a warrior.
The XXI Century woman is a woman who is not defined by stereotypes; a woman who has a flame of passion beneath her that nothing can extinguish, because her only motor is to be better and happier each and every day. Well… as getting over the feminist matter…and I do think that everyone should be feminist like Canada’s president #instantcrush, because Yes, I am about to talk about the subject…YOLO!…
First of all, I here share the definition of “Feminism” by the Real Academy of the Spanish Language:
Del fr. féminisme, y este del lat. femĭna ‘woman’ e -isme ‘-ism’.
1. m. Ideology that defends that women should have the same rights as men.
I believe that what men or people who are against feminism is not really the true meaning of being a feminist but the extremist counterpart: the feminazis. Those extremist women who believe they should be above men, those who think men do not contribute to the world; those who condemn waxing, makeup, fashion, heels and over all, chivalry. (Yes, it sounds very retrograde idea for a modern ideolody as feminism)
Guys: let me say this and I allow myself to talk for many women who think the way I do (friends, colleagues). Being a feminist only implies that we want equal rights as men, equal opportunities to get ahead, that we do not believe it is fair to pay a different price (a larger price) for products just because we are women. We want to earn the same as any man earns when we do the exact same job ( the american woman earns just 76 cents for any dollar that a man earns, and this is called gender pay gap. (Pay Scale, 2015))
We don’t want to be discriminated or being called sentimental or in the extreme case “bossy” when we play the bussiness game as a man; we want to break in the glass ceiling to navigate freely across all the areas of society. We want parity, we are not seeking to step over the masculine gender. Feminists are women who profoundly achknowledge our self worth and are aquainted with the idea that we can get ahead by our own means, we know we can be triumphant and take over the top spots in the business world, and besides that we can have a personal and family life, as other #powerwomen like Angela Merkel, Michelle Obama have proven before. And talking about chivalry: not because we can earn four figure salaries and we want to give us the queen life we have always dreamed of, it doesn’t mean we don’t love to be sought by the man who is chasing us, opening doors, flower giving, romantic words and paying the check are actions that demostrate your attentions and intentions towards us, my intention is not to crush your dreams…but honey…its 2017, not every girl is a gold digger…but yet I still know plenty of them. (sorry not sorry)
But well, to end and close this polemic I would want to finish up by pondering about everything I said before together with an article about Steve Jobs, which I came across in the morning where he mentioned that the best way to obtain what we want is to simply ask. As the saying in spanish ” Al que no habla, Dios no lo escucha” , He who doesn’t speak cannot be heard from God, so it’s all about speaking up for what you want.
My advice is this: don’t let the world say you can’t do something, might as well take it as a personal challenge and demostrate the contrary. Never doubt in asking what you want and it shall be given to you. I am sure that when you’re aware of what you want and every day you choose your decisions towards that goal, the universe gets on your side so you can accomplish every single one of your plans. Don’t let your current context to define the success of failure of your goals, rather reconfigure it so it stimulates and helps you in your search for success. Never stop working day by day and fighting with passion and constancy to achieve what you are longing. Don’t see money as an obstacle, ideas mixed with hard work are giving, and in the end money comes and money goes, and if you adjust your priorities towards what you want, everything else will sort in adjunction. And lastly, never stop believing in you not even for a second, remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day, and you honey, have all your life to build.
